Teacher Appreciation & Holiday Store – Thank you for your support!

Thank you parents for showing teacher appreciation with Cookie Walk 2012! The teachers love this annual school tradition. Teachers took home a beautifully packaged carton of cookies and we had enough left over to treat the bus drivers too. Thank you!

We would also like to thank everyone who shopped at the holiday store this year and supported our school. The holiday store features school merchandise and fun gifts for kids to select, and every year the kids enjoy taking time to shop for friends and family.

Huge thanks go to Lena Graham for spearheading Cookie Walk 2012 and to Lisa Lindley for managing the Holiday Store.

November Principal’s Coffee: Literacy, Reading Levels, and End of Year Testing

Principal Garvin hosted an informative meeting during November’s Principal’s Coffee at Just Baked on November 14.  The coffee allowed parents to ask questions and it allowed Principal Garvin to provide additional insight on literacy and changes to End of Year testing.  Specific topics on the agenda included:

  • Balanced Literacy,
  • New End of Year Testing, and
  • School Updates.

Attached you will find all of the documents distributed at the meeting.  The Guided Reading Materials include detailed information for parents to assess a child’s reading level, thus allowing parents to better select reading materials for each child.  On December 10th, more information on reading levels will be sent home with your child.

Fun Run Raises $17,000!

Cornelius Elementary School completed its most successful Fun Run fundraiser yet.  We are still collecting funds and final dollar figures have not yet been released.  However, initial projections estimate that the event raised $17,000 for Cornelius Elementary.

Gina Wells led the successful fundraiser that served not only to raise money for our school, but also got our kids running on a beautiful fall day.  An added bonus of the Fun Run is that students were given the chance to develop presentation and sales skills when they went out into the community seeking sponsors.

The event was covered by Cornelius News.net.  Click here to read the article.

Thank you to all of the parents out there that helped to make this fundraiser such a success!

Scholastic Book Fair Delivers New Books to our Media Center

The Fall Scholastic Book Fair proved to be the school’s most successful book fair in over a year, raising almost $8,000.  The PTO Board met with Principal Garvin and it was agreed 100% of funds raised would be used to purchase new books for the school media center through the Scholastic Program.

Each year the school has the option of receiving cash from Scholastic for the book fair or applying the earnings to books from Scholastic.  The media center has been in need of receiving new books.  The new books should be received by the media center before the end of the year.

Jennifer Guerry organized and oversaw the book fair for the PTO.  She was extremely pleased with the success of the program this fall.

Thank you to everyone who shopped at our Fall Book Fair.  We hope to have an equally successful book fair this spring!
